Pearl & Dean Research

As we thought of our initial ideas to film our horror trailer, we researched the Pearl and Dean website to get a detailed overview of the target demographic, upcoming and previous, horror film releases. We have analysed SAW VII, Final Destination 2, Shelter and Scream 3.

From these four films, Scream 3 and Final Destination 2 have already been released. where as SAW VII and Shelter are being released this year 2010. So from the information we have taken from these two films the distributors will have a general idea the demographic their film is targeting towards.

The upcoming Horror film, SHELTER, has a demographic which appeals the most to 15-24 year olds (46%) and 25-34 year olds (23%). In terms of gender, its moderatly even between Males (46%) and females (54%) who are interested in the film. Reasons for such a high appeal to women could be because of the female actors lead role, Julianne Moore.

Saw VI, distributed by Lionsgate Films mainly appeals to men between the ages of 15-24 and those in class C1 demographic.  As we checked the C1 demographic, it states that around 28% of the UK population fit in this band. These types of people supposedly are owners of small establishments and juniour management. This analysis helped us  look back at the further Saw films, Saw VI - II, we have realised that many of the male audience between the ages of 15-24 who watched earlier films tended to follow watching the Saw frachise where as women and all the other classes apart from C1 started to drop as they did not want to follow the story.
Its quite clear now that the Saw franchise tends to appeal to men in the ages of 15-24% and C1. Through this research we have a general idea how we should target audience our trailer should appeal to.

Two films we have found which inspired us to film friction were Scream 3 and Final Destination 2.
The data from both films is that they both appealed to males between the ages of 15-24. However it can also appeal to females as the percentage of females who were interested in both films are nearly equal.

Overall the certificate we would give our film would be a 15. This is based on the research on the four films we have searched and their appeal which is generally targeted towards 15-24.

The correlation we have found with all four of these horror films is that the intended demographic the directors targeted towards all had a major influence in the C1 class.
